"Comment on: "Optical properties of metallic nanowires by valence electron energy loss spectroscopy"";
Materials Letters, 72 (2012), S. 168 - 169.

Kurzfassung englisch:
Recently Laffont et al. have published a paper [Laffont, L., Lonjon, A., Dantras, E., Demont, P., and Lacabanne, C., Materials Letters (2011), doi:10.1016/j.matlet.2011.07.082] in which the determination of the dielectric function of gold and nickel nanowires is determined by employing valence electron energy loss spectrometry and subsequent Kramers-Kronig Analysis (KKA). For gold their result shows a real part of the dielectric function with a value of three at zero eV energy loss which corresponds to a refractive index n = 1.7, because the imaginary part of their resulting dielectric function has a value of zero at the respective energy loss. In the same manuscript they write that they have used a refractive index of n → ∞ for the normalization during the KKA routine. This discrepancy therefore requires a more detailed discussion. Finally we will find out that data treatment can lead to extremely huge errors if it is not done accurately enough
